Netflix Has Been Giving ✨Representation✨

Sumedha Maddali '24

Over the years, Netflix has consistently released a million Indian themed TV shows for anyone and everyone around the world to watch and enjoy. Now, you, the readers, will be exposed to my exclusive ratings of three exclusive ones.

  1. Indian Matchmaking (⭐️⭐️/5)

We’ll start off strong with the universally known Indian Matchmaking series that Netflix first released a couple years ago, which was followed by a second season this August. Clearly, it hooked on to the right crowds, catching the attention of hundreds of thousands. The audience varied among…certainly included the one side that absolutely worshipped the show and then the not so impressed crowd constantly mocking the show. Needless to say, I was part of the latter [1].

This show highlights Sima Taparia from Mumbai, a matchmaker primarily working for Indian-Americans, and the hilarious drama involving the dates and other interactions between all the characters. I really felt like I was watching the Indian version of Keeping up with the Kardashians. Whether that is a red or green flag is left to the viewer to decide [1].

  1. Mismatched (⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5)

Mismatched Season 2 finally revealed itself to the world on October 14th of this year. Ah, the day everyone has been waiting for. This show is relaxing, humorous and relatable; the three qualities everyone looks for in a comfort show. Starring Prajakta Kohli and Rohit Saraf, the show centers on their fiery romance, fights, and reconciliations throughout not only with each other but with their almost toxic friend group. Under all the surface level scenes of the show, there lie deeper lessons to be learned about mental health, bullying, identity issues and so much more.

This would be the perfect show to watch during your downtime [2].

  1. The Fame Game (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5)

In a nutshell, I would describe this incredible show as mind-blowing. The mysteries, the romance, the tension between absolutely every character was completely chef’s kiss. Without giving away too much about the series, I will tell you that it features the legendary actress of Bollywood, Madhuri Dixit as one of the most successful actresses during her time, as well as highlighting her intense family dynamics and her relationship with the outside world. To the world, Dixit’s character seems like the ideal woman with the ideal family that everyone craves. But, little do they know that it was all a facade. Indeed, Dixit faces the epiphanies and realities of her relationship as a result of domestic and verbal abuse by her husband. On top of her intense suffering, she goes through the hardships of supporting her son’s sexuality amidst the most conservative societies of India, as well as the rise of nepotism in the Bollywood industry [3].

Watch to be simply mind-blown [3].

Well, readers, it has certainly been an honor writing for you. Keep following this series to find out more!
