In 1960, a young woman with nothing but binoculars, a notebook, and a dream went off to explore the forest of Gombe, Tanzania, looking to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Jane Goodall was just 26 years old at the time, but it didn’t take long for her to discover that chimpanzees were like humans in many ways. She was the first to discover that they could make tools like termite “fishing” sticks and use rocks like hammers to crack nuts. These findings immediately turned the scientific world upside down, challenging the notion that toolmaking was unique to humans. She also identified them using names such as David Greybeard and Flo [1] as she documented their complex social structures and their capacity for love, grief, and joy. To Dr. Goodall, they were not just subjects, they were individuals with distinct personalities and emotions, challenging the detached approach of traditional science.
During much of her early career, Goodall faced skepticism because she had no formal scientific research training. She also faced a great deal of gender discrimination, including not being taken seriously by most of the scientific community or being called a “Geographic Covergirl”. Despite this, she balked at changing her scientific approach, spending years in Gombe making genuine bonds with these animals and not drawing hasty conclusions. Her approach allowed her to discover how humans and primates are so closely linked, not just by genetics, but also by behavior. Her work ultimately changed perceptions on how we as humans should view our place in the natural world: we’re not separate from nature but part of it. She illuminated the profound interconnectedness of all living things, showing us that if we harm one part of an ecosystem, we harm the whole. Ironically, it was this tenet that drove Jane Goodall from Tanzania after nearly 50 years of field research. She realized that during her time there, the world’s chimpanzee population had dwindled to a third of what it was in the 1960s [2] and it was time to educate the western world, bringing to light the atrocities of poaching and deforestation.
Through her Roots & Shoots program, now active in over 60 countries, Jane Goodall had continuously raised awareness and money to help build sanctuaries to protect the chimpanzee population[3]. The program also empowers young people to become environmental changemakers and endorses a model for modern sustainability efforts in their own communities. Its core principle takes into account that we cannot protect nature by ignoring human needs, nor can we meet human needs by destroying nature. In one of her last interviews before her death, she tried to answer the question of why human beings, the most intellectual species on Earth, are destroying earth. Goodall responded, “I believe there’s a disconnect between the clever brain and seat of love and compassion in the human heart. What we have to do is link the heart with the brain again. Let us move forward and understand that this life is more than just making money. We should not be living for money, but we need money to live.” [4]
When Jane Goodall passed away in 2025, the world lost both a pioneering primatologist and a visionary for environmental conservation. She fundamentally transformed our understanding of the natural world and the importance of implementing e sustainability. Her legacy lives on through continued chimpanzee research and programs that galvanize young activists to spread the message that we must reconnect humanity with nature. In the end, Jane Goodall’s work remains a beacon of hope, reminding us that everyone has the power to make a difference in creating a more compassionate world for all living beings.
