November 6th, 2025 marked the death of James D. Watson, a molecular biologist, zoologist, and geneticist. Watson was most commonly known for his co-discovery of the double helix shape of DNA. He went on to reach great success in molecular biology, publishing multiple books and textbooks and being appointed to prestigious roles. However, later in life, he became a pariah, shunned from the scientific community. Now, Watson is remembered as a man of many talents but also a man of many controversies. [1]
James Dewey Watson was born on April 6th, 1928 to businessman James D. Watson and social services worker Margaret Jean Mitchell Watson. As a child, he attended public schools on the south side of Chicago. He and his father shared a hobby of bird watching, and so he took interest in ornithology. [2]
At fifteen years old, Watson enrolled in the accelerated program at the University of Chicago on a tuition scholarship [2]. It was during this time that he read Erwin Schrödinger’s What Is Life?, which shifted his interest from ornithology to genetics [3]. In 1947, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology [2].
However, Watson was not done with his education. A few months later, he was attracted to the Indiana University Bloomington by the presence of Hermann Joseph Muller, a Nobel laureate and highly influential geneticist, leading him to join the graduate program in Genetics. Watson received his PhD in Zoology and then began a Postdoctoral research year at the University of Copenhagen. [1]
It was in 1951 when Watson began working at his first laboratory — the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory [2]. It was there where he met Francis Crick, a British physicist turned biologist. Two years after Watson’s introduction to the laboratory, he and Crick made a tremendous discovery — the double helix structure of Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid or DNA. The two deduced and built a physical model of the structure using evidence from prior scientists, notably Rosalind Franklin and Erwin Chargaff. [4]
Cavendish Laboratory director Sir Lawrence Bragg first revealed the discovery at a Solvay Conference in Belgium on April 8th, 1953 [5]. It first gained publicity upon the publishing of an academic paper called “Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids: A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid” in a scientific journal titled Nature [4]. Less than a decade later, the paper earned Watson and Crick the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and years later, is still regarded as a monumental scientific breakthrough. After his discovery, Watson took up several acclaimed roles. Two years after the discovery, Watson accepted the position of a Professor of Biology at Harvard University, promoting research in molecular biology. In 1968, he became the director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory or CSHL. From 1990 to 1992, he was the first director of the famed Human Genome Project, after which was promoted to the president of CSHL in 1994, and the chancellor in 2003. [1]
Throughout his life, Watson published over a dozen books on biology. Arguably his most famous work was The Double Helix, a personal, autobiographical account of the discovery. The book became famous for its candid, striking narration, but infamous for sparking controversy. Critics called the book misogynistic because of its perceived negative attention towards Rosalind Franklin. They asserted that it gave the impression that she was unable to interpret her own data. The book was not Watson’s only controversy. Around his mid-60s, he began making comments that stirred anger in the scientific community. Watson repeatedly talked of a link between race and intelligence, citing IQ test results and a statistical method called factor analysis. He also made a lot of derogatory claims about women, notably belittling Franklin and asserting that it would be “pretty great” if all women were genetically engineered for beauty. These claims are said to be tied to a lifelong belief of misogynist ideas. Watson also allegedly supported genetic screening, genetic engineering, eugenics, and more. Due to his infamous comments, CSHL revoked his honorary titles and severed ties with him in 2019. Some side with Watson, saying he spoke hard truths that are true but not socially accepted. At present, the scientific community considers his claims radical, discriminatory, and unfounded. [6]
Overall, James D. Watson was influential but controversial. Many posthumous articles speculate whether his allegations outweigh his contributions; others speak of him as a misled tragic hero. Regardless, his contributions to the field of molecular biology fundamentally and irreversibly changed our understanding of life itself and will continue to drive scientific and medical advancements into the future.
