On Sunday, December 8th, Ridge High School’s varsity football team travelled to Rutgers stadium to win the NJSIAA championship against Union 48-13.
During the game, Ridge continued their great defensive play. Connor Stieglitz, Matt Soulas and Nick Franzese picked off throws all over the field. Stieglitz along with Alex Heffernan and A.J. Peterpaul had sacks.
The offensive performance for Ridge, like usual, was well above par. The team rattled Unions defense scoring eight touchdowns in total. Ryan Bell received three of Conor Hughes’ four passing touchdowns (Hughes also scored a rushing touchdown) and Liam Derkasch and Michael Dunsheath each contributed with a rushing touchdown of their own.
Captain Nick Franzese stated, “The hard work ethic we have, it really shows what kind of team we have, and coming out here … I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
This win and the Devils undefeated record are only a few of the many amazing accolades Ridge has accomplished this season. The last time Ridge won the championship was in 2003, and the players and fans were ecstatic to see their team take home the trophy again this year.
“I am very humbled by the amazing season the boys had and by the overwhelming attendance and support from our student body and town at all of our games, and in particular our game at Rutgers,” Coach Tracy said following the team’s win. “The guys worked very hard the entire off-season, and for the seniors it was really a 3 year journey. With great teamwork and execution the team played 12 opponents, nearly all of whom were bigger physically than we were, and beat them all.
“The culmination was a near perfect performance in the biggest game of the year, the Sectional Final at Rutgers,” Tracy continued. “This is all any coach can ask, did you do your best when your best was needed? For our guys the answer was a resounding yes. I thank our players, coaches, administration and staff at Ridge, and all of our support groups who contributed–this truly was and is a school, town, and community effort. Well deserved by all.”
