Aiming to spread awareness regarding the issue of global hunger, the Ending Hunger Alliance was created this year by Sophia Yan ’15 and Esha Patel ‘15. Since world hunger is running rampant in today’s society, this club focuses on fighting this growing challenge.
The Ending Hunger Alliance works with the World Food Program, sponsored by the UN, as well as the Stop Hunger Now program. Advisor Mrs. Tan discusses the positive implications of the club, stating, “The students in our organization are striving to bring the suffering of these people to the attention of the community.”
This year, the club’s primary fundraiser is the meal packaging event, sponsored by the Stop Hunger Now organization. Club members will raise money through a myriad of small fundraisers and then donate all the money they garnered throughout the year to host a meal packaging event; each meal is an easy 25 cents. Since members will have the opportunity to personally package the meals, they can see first-hand the impact they are making.
Yan ’15 explains, “By sending out those meals to people who need immediate relief, we really get to see how even just one club at Ridge can have positives effects that echo throughout our community.”
The goals of this club not only reach out to the local community, but also to students within Ridge High School. The Ending Hunger Alliance not only changes the lives of those suffering from hunger, but also opens the eyes of many Ridge students to the plight of those suffering.
When living in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, it is easy to take resources for granted. As Alan Du ’16 expressed, “My friends and I joke all the time about the quality of the cafeteria food. People never really think about how much other people would value the very same food you’re complaining about if we don’t raise awareness about the issue.” By spreading awareness about global hunger, members hope to garner more support for their cause and raise money towards aiding the hungry.
Global hunger has a huge effect on the international scale because it serves as the basis for other social and humanitarian protections. To join the fight against world hunger, join the Ending Hunger Alliance which meets on Wednesday mornings in room 710.
