Golden Gossip

This year at the Golden Globes, an awards ceremony for the biggest TV and film stars, the host Ricky Gervais let everything go. In honor of his last night being the host for the ceremony, Gervais threw all caution to the wind and said everything and anything he wanted.

Ricky Gervais is an English comedian, but he is also an actor, writer, film producer, director, and musician. He’s had several roles in movies and shows such as Night at the Museum, The Office, and For Your Consideration. But most importantly Gervais has been a frequent host of the Golden Globes Ceremony, appearing in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020.

While giving his opening speech for the show, Ricky Gervais decided that it was his moment to shine and took his chance on stage with confidence. He mocked several companies, such as Disney, Apple, and Amazon and went after many different celebrities for their previous actions. Gervais said, “Apple roared into the TV game with ‘The Morning Show,’ a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing made by a company that runs sweatshops in China,” he said.” So you say you’re ‘woke’, but the companies you work for, Apple, Amazon, Disney… If ISIS had a streaming service you would be calling your agents.” He called out several stars for their connections to large corporations and how desperate some of them are for attention. During his speech it was clear that he went completely off track on what he was supposed to say, the writers were not happy with him. At one point, the comedian laughed at Leonardo Dicaprio for his 3 hours long film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He said, “Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and, by the end, his date was too old for him.” Gervais also set his sights on poking fun at director Martin Scorsese thought’s on how Marvels movies were at theme parks, laughing at how he didn’t get why the director would be at a theme park, “He’s not big enough for any of the rides.” After a while, the comedian ended his monologue by warning celebrities not to make any more long speeches during their award acceptance. He went on to say that they weren’t in any place to be making political or “woke” statements. In fact, Gervais actually threw a little shade on Greta Thunberg, a Nobel Prize Nominee, for her actions, “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything,” he declared. “You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.” The comedian has been known to make some controversial jokes, but the ones in this speech might’ve taken it a little bit to far.

Ricky Gervais’s last and final speech as a host at the Golden Globes was decorated with colorful remarks on both today’s celebrities and subtle social problems. Though his jokes were funny and light to most people, we shouldn’t completely disregard all of it. Ricky Gervais spoke the truth in some parts and in a society that is twisted with lies the truth can be painful. It is important to remember the social implication in things and to take everything with a grain of salt.
