What is “6 7”? We’ve all heard it before, but what does it really mean? Up until around late 2024, they were just two numbers. However, that all changed once famous rapper Skrilla released a track called “Doot Doot (6 7)”. In the song, the chorus contains the line “6-7, I just bipped right on the highway (Bip, bip)” [1]. While the phrase “6-7” didn’t have any inherent meaning, it was frequently used in basketball edits on social media like those of LaMelo Ball, who, notably, was 6’7”. Additionally, the phrase “6 7” was frequently used by 17-year-old Overtime Elite player Taylen Kinney until it practically became his catchphrase and a part of his identity. Because the two were inextricably linked, both he and the meme skyrocketed in popularity. Kinney even developed a brand of water called “6 7 Water”, making Kinney the first ever high school athlete to create a beverage brand [2].
However, the story doesn’t end here. Around early 2025, a video titled “MY OVERPOWERED AAU TEAM HAS FINALLY RETURNED!” was released by a Youtuber named Cam Wilder. At around the 13:26 mark, the camera panned to a kid by the name of Maverick Trevillian—more commonly known as “Mason”, “6 7 Kid”, or “SCP-067”—and his friend. Then, with a grin on his face, he went up to the camera and said “6 7” while doing the up-and-down hand motion. The rest is history. Now that it had a face, the meme surpassed its already ginormous virality until any child with access to the internet knew what it was. People left and right were making analog horror edits of Mason with an abnormally large, gaping mouth, and soon the internet was flooded with “6 7” memes [3].
However, that still doesn’t answer the question of what “6 7” means.. According to Dictionary.com, it “can mean nothing and everything all at once, adding to its mysterious allure” [4]. While it’s most commonly used to say “whatever” or “so-so”, it can be incredibly flexible too. In an article by New York Times, “teacher and education content creator” Mr. Lindsay says, “Questions like ‘How tall are you,’ ‘What time is it,’ ‘What’s that?’ all get the response of ‘six seven’” [5]. It can mean many different things depending on the context, but, on the whole, it doesn’t have a concrete meaning and is only meant as a reference to the popular meme. However, the phrase “6 7” has become so commonplace that even people unaware of where it came from still use the phrase.
Despite not having a particular meaning, its impact, good or bad, is undeniable. Even counting to 10 is enough for people to say “six seven”. It’s such a common phrase that it’s hard to go one day in school without hearing it being said. The fact that the phrase doesn’t have a solid definition is what makes the phrase so popular. It’s a filler word whose meaning is shaped by the context it’s used in, which means that the word can be used in dozens of discussions. Moreover, it has the added benefit of adding some humor to a conversation as “6 7” is a joke almost everybody knows by now. Even teachers know about the phrase, and some are even using it to their advantage. One Tiktok user by the name of @thesandylion posted a Tiktok on September 9th, showing how she is using the phrase to quiet her students down as if it’s the next “1, 2, 3, eyes on me” [6]. However, there is still a general consensus that this phrase has essentially poisoned the well. After all, this phrase falls under the category of “brainrot”, which has that name for a reason. It seems as though that even if “6 7” finally dies out, another nonsensical, odd word or phrase like “clanker” or “skibidi” will just take its place in a never ending cycle.
While “6 7” used to be only two numbers, it has become such a well-known meme that it has far transcended its origins, becoming a phrase that is hard to avoid on any given day. Because the internet has allowed for ideas to spread incredibly quickly and easily, some ideas are bound to be far worse than others. Although “6 7” is currently a very popular trend, we can only hope that, like many other forms of slang, it will eventually die out.
