A very strange phenomenon occurred at Ridge High School the week of October 14—the majority of the student population came into school smiling, and left school still smiling. The reason for the sudden surge in student happiness could only be explained by the excitement caused by spirit week, which culminated in the animated pep rally, and homecoming game and dance.
Every year during spirit week, all grades dress up in attire for a different theme each day. This year’s themes included tie-dye, formal wear, favorite sports team, college apparel, and grade color on Friday for the pep rally which did not disappoint.
Every day when walking through the hallways, one could see masses of people dressed up in the theme of the day, stopping to admire each others’ outfits before hurrying to their next class. Even the freshmen, who have only been in Ridge for a little over a month and a half, got swept up in the excitement. Lauren Ellis ‘17 affirms that she “participated in all five days and it was really fun!”
On Friday spirits were especially high; all four grades crowded into the gymnasium, amid music, cheering, and shouting. The senior class ran into the gymnasium after the other grades had filled in, making an impressive entrance; however, it seemed like the sophomores dominated the pep rally, winning the tug-a-war.
However divided the grades might have appeared to be at the pep rally, school unity reappeared at the homecoming football game, where the team won the game against Plainfield. Even those who usually don’t participate in school events made their way to the game, channeling the school spirit left over from the week.
Katherine Leopold ’14 relates her experience: “The homecoming game was the best Ridge football game I have been to this far. Due to the senior tailgate, many of my friends attended the game. Though I usually am not much of a football fan, I had a lot of fun!”
All in all, this year’s spirit week and homecoming turned out to be exciting and enjoyable for all of those who participated.
