Despite the fact that quarterly assessments were only introduced last year, many students have already figured out a few tips to help prepare for these assessments. Here is a list of the four best strategies to help you find success all year long!
Give yourself enough time to study. Since there are only two tests a day, you should have enough time if you start your heavy studying two weeks before. Anudeep Akenapalli ‘15 explains, “I study for quarterlies by studying on the last day, but if you have time to study in advance, make sure you do it so that you have more time for your brain to process the information”.
This idea is common, as Kimberly Castillo ‘16 also advises, “When you’re studying for quarterlies, it’s really important to study ahead of time instead of just the day before so you have a chance to ask your teacher a question if you don’t understand something or forget it.”
Time is an important factor of studying, so start early to make sure you can go over everything.
Relax. Castillo continues, “Don’t stress yourself out by studying frantically in between classes on the day of. It could confuse you or just psych you out. If you do, you’re most like the person that stayed up late the night before studying so you know the information.”
If you psych yourself out, you won’t be able to retain information as well. Have a calm mindset and be confident that you will be able to do well.
Ask questions. If you are unsure about something, ask a friend or your teacher before the quarterly. That way, you can be sure that you definitely know all of the information. Taking a test and not fully understanding a topic can hurt your grade. You might have forgotten about information you learned in the beginning of the marking period, so ask questions in class to help refresh your memory.
Pay attention during all your classes. Latin teacher Mr. Joshua Gebhardt recommends the following: “1.) Pay attention in class. 2.) Do the homework thoughtfully. 3.) Don’t be afraid to ask for help. 4.) Don’t panic. Done consistently throughout the marking, the combination of these four tips should serve you well on the quarterly.”
Although it is very important to review before the quarterlies, you also need to understand the lesson when it is being taught so you can gather all the information you can.
Mr. Gebhardt continues with some humorous wisdom: “As far as tips for taking the quarterly… 1.) Choose the right answer. 2.) Do not choose the wrong answer.”
