Even though homework and school activities take up most of the average student’s life here at Ridge High School, it is quite important to take a break away from all the intense stress and high-paced work. Television today is a great way to relax and unwind one’s mind, especially if the shows are intriguing and thought-provoking. There are many television shows out there with different genres and subjects, and everyone has a favorite program.
One television show that is thriving at the moment is American Horror Story: Freak Show. The program tells the tale of one of the last travelling circuses in America. It takes place in Jupiter, Florida in 1952, where a woman named Elsa Mars must manage an entire freak show circus as well as its interesting members. It is the fourth season of the American Horror Series.
Freshman Nina Palawani ’18 states, “American Horror Story is so good! It’s amazing,” adding that she has even watched six episodes of the show in a day. A television program that amazing certainly deserves to be watched. As a side note, the show does display some “unappealing” images; however it’s nothing a young teenager (and older folks) can’t handle. Additionally, the show is rated Mature, and can be seen on FX and Netflix for its three other seasons.
Freshman Matthew Velasco ‘18 lists his favorites as “Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead…” The list goes on and on. Gossip Girl talks about the lives of several adolescents living in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It has won eighteen Teen Choice Awards and has received many award nominations; although the show’s season has ended, it is still available on Netflix. Pretty Little Liars is a teenage American mystery drama that is currently on its fifth season, airing on ABC Family. The show tells the tale of a group of four young women who team up to solve the mystery of the murder of their compatriot.
Many of the shows that have a massive amount of fans/viewers are programs that include fantasy or a dramatic plot or story. The Walking Dead for example, tells of a world where the apocalypse has hit hard on the lives of many people, turning them into eerie and frightening zombies; a group of young survivors must toil to find a safe place to reside. Doctor Who and Supernatural are also in the genre of magic and mystery; however, Doctor Who is a bit more futuristic while Supernatural deals with present day monsters, spiritual beings, and the paranormal.
A few television shows that have been cancelled this season are The Millers and Perception (after three seasons). Reasons why are unknown. However, there are many more TV shows out there that are waiting to be watched, so if you have enough time to turn on your television, find the show that most interests you. Perhaps when you’re just a tad bit tired from school and home, and would like to take a break from it all, grab the remote, or your computer, and immerse yourself in worlds apart from today’s reality.
