Hanks Delivers in Action-Packed Flick
The story of a captain forced to protect his crew and his cargo and to escape life-threatening situations requiring miracles—this is story of Captain Phillips.
The film revolves around Richard Phillips, a cargo ship captain from Alabama played by Tom Hanks, steering around the African Horn, home to notorious Somalian Pirates. These pirates board Captain Philips’ ship, forcing him to take the situation in his own hands and protect his crew. A lot of things stand out from this film, but the most striking aspect remains the acting of Mr. Hanks. Critics call his performance outstanding, and by far one of the best roles in his career.
Yunhee Kang ’15 believes that “Tom Hanks did it again… his acting in this movie is even comparable to Forrest Gump.”
In addition, the movie proves to be extremely realistic. If a viewer were to enter the movie without knowing anything of its background, they might mistake the film for a documentary. All in all, Captain Philips is a thrilling and enjoyable film that will not disappoint.
Carrying Horror Movies into the Modern Age
You may have heard of the horror classic Carrie, directed by Brian De Palma in 1976, adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same name. On October 18th 2013, cinemas across the country again welcomed this classic story with a new Carrie film. This remake pays homage to original, while fitting into the modern age of horror films.
Taking Sissy Spaceks roll, Chloe Grace Moretz stars as the titular character Carrie White, while Julianne Moore stars as Margaret White, Carrie’s Christian Fundamentalist mother. Carrie is isolated and outcasted, ridiculed, and bullied by the rest of her school; thus, she ends up having no friends and being labeled as a freak for her twitchy and shy behavior. She grows up knowing that she has a special power—to move objects with her mind—but she keeps this power from her mother and others, as she cannot yet fully control this extraordinary skill.
While some critics doubt the film’s ability to offer a new take on the story, John Barasso ‘14 remains excited to see the film: “I love the thrill of horror movies and the commercial [for Carrie] caught my attention even though I have never read Stephen King’s book.” Without a doubt, Carrie epitomizes a classic horror film made for today’s audiences.
