Lorde, though only 16, is a fresh new artist coming from New Zealand. Her new single, “Royals,” recently debuted and has reached the Billboard’s Hot 100 making her the first artist from New Zealand to reach #1 in the United States. Her newest album, Pure Heroine, was released on September 7th, 2013. Many people classify Lorde’s music as Alternative with a bit of Indie to it. Emma Dewil ‘16 has recently started to listen to Lorde: “I absolutely adore the way her music is beginning to revolutionize pop.”
Passenger, also known as Mike Rosenberg, has also gained popularity lately due to his new single “Let Her Go.” Many critics define Passenger as a British-folk rock singer with a bit of country added into the mix. His single, “Let Her Go,” has been in the top charts for 16 countries so far. The song’s lyrics are extremely thought-provoking, yet the song’s tone remains extremely mellow giving it a relaxing feel.
Macklemore, a name now recognized everywhere, is still new to the music scene. His music is considered to be a mix of Hip Hop and Pop, and his single “Thrift Shop” has reached number 1 on the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart without the use of a major record label. Recently, Mackelmore released The Heist, his debut album, and he will begin working on a new album as soon as The Heist tour finishes. Nicole Fitzgerald ‘16, describes Macklemore’s music as “emotional. [His music] describes how everyone is different. He really makes people believe that being different is okay, and never something to be ashamed of.”
