Legwork for Lungs

The Legwork for Lungs 5k and Mile Walk is a second-annual event that will take place on Sunday, November 15th, 2015 at Mountain Park and though its main focus will be the 5k Run/Walk, there will also be a 1-mile fitness walk, Tug-o-War Battle, raffle, and carnival games. Food, music, prizes, shirts, and medals will be provided.

This event is held to raise funds for lung cancer research at MSKCC during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, inspired by a battle with the  unforgiving diagnosis. What sets this run apart from others in our area is that its volunteers are almost entirely teenagers, primarily because it is organized by me, a Ridge freshman. My personal reason to raise money for lung cancer research is that 3 years ago, a close family friend was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. Her mortality scared me. I dislike feeling helpless, particularly before multiplying cells, and I know the best way I can thank her for what she has given to me is by helping people in her situation. This woman is a patient at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and has highly recommended this hospital as an organization truly worth donating to.

Founded in 1884, Memorial Sloan Kettering is the “world’s oldest and largest private institution devoted to prevention, patient care, research, and education in cancer.” It is known as the premier research facility in our country, and scientists and clinicians travel to this hospital to conduct innovative research.

Ann Kang ‘19, who volunteered as the Carnival Games Coordinator, confirms, “If you want to get some of the best cancer treatment in the US, then you know the name Memorial Sloan Kettering.”

Bridget Torcivia ’19, who is heavily involved in event organization, states, “We’re trying to do everything we can to increase event participation, from distributing flyers at local 5ks to trying to advertise online. Last year, the Legwork for Lungs team raised a total of $2,750 to fund Dr. Paiek’s lung cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with the help of our 81 runners, 25 walkers, 35-plus local businesses acting as sponsors, 20 volunteers, and many other contributors. This year, we hope to raise close to $5,000 and all event proceedings are well underway.”

The organization seeks Ridge volunteers to help out – water stand volunteers, young advertising specialists, finish line helpers – if students are interested in this event, the organizers will find an activity for them to participate in.

The organization hopes to continue this 5k as a yearly tradition. Any additional information regarding the race, including registration, and a donation page can be found at www.legworkforlungs.org. Prospective volunteers can email [email protected], and all Ridge students are welcome to come as spectators and enjoy the hot drinks and refreshments!
