You walk into a room and see many people frozen in place—their faces stuck, their bodies immobile, their positions unchanging. A couple of months ago, you might have been a little confused, maybe even creeped out. But now, upon seeing this sight, you laugh with amusement. This “non-moving” movement is sweeping the nation; it is the newest internet challenge, rightfully named the #mannequinchallenge.

A viral sensation, the Mannequin challenge consists of staying still in a certain pose while the song, “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd plays in the background. Celebrities like Desiigner, Marshmello, and Kelly Clarkson have joined in on the trend. Even sports teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Pittsburgh Panthers have done it in their locker rooms. But the most high-profile rendition is undoubtedly that of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Receiving recognition from these famous figures, the Mannequin Challenge has taken the world by storm.

The original spin people put their renditions is what ultimately makes this challenge so fun. In one challenge, a high school cheerleading team is mid-cheer; in another, two people freeze, preparing to fight each other. Some even place a challenge within a challenge – water bottle flipping in their Mannequin challenge.

Navya Khattar ’20 expresses her amusement at the new trend: “I did [the Mannequin] challenge in my English class. It was a lot of fun: I was sitting on the windowsill pretending to take a picture while the cameraman went around the room. I still don’t know how some people can hold a handstand and not move at all during the challenge – I could barely prevent myself from laughing!”

Despite its ongoing popularity, many frown upon the Mannequin challenge. For those that do not enjoy the ordeal, they find it to be just plain stupid and a waste of time, neither funny nor creative.

Adit Roy ’18 expresses his mild dislike for the challenge: “Sure it is somewhat entertaining, but it is also stupid. I get why people like it, but it just isn’t that hilarious of a challenge to me. The concept just seems so fruitless. What is the point of this?”
The Mannequin Challenge seem childish, but that may just be its appeal. Whether you like it or not, the Mannequin challenge is the most popular internet craze out there. And crazy doesn’t need to have a point.
