Along with the changing colors of fall leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and haunted hay rides, fall has brought us a new selection of blockbusters to try on for size at our local movie theaters. Among the plethora of choices, here’s the breakdown of some of the most popular:
The Maze Runner: Moderately to highly rated, as indicated by its 7.5 star rating on IMDB, The Maze Runner is an action packed adaptation of James Dashner’s 2009 novel. The Maze Runner series take place in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian society. This specific movie is the story of a group of teenagers that have, for a reason unbeknownst to them, all landed on the same strip of land, known to them as the Glade. The plot of the movie circles around their attempts at escape, and the journeys of “runners” that face the ever-changing, deadly maze that surrounds their isolated civilization.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day: A light comedy for the whole family to enjoy, this fall movie stars Steve Carrell, Miguel Arteta, Ed Oxenbould and Jennifer Garner. The storyline of the movie follows 11-year old Alexander through one of the worst days of his life. His comedic obstacles include gum in his hair, which eventually turns into the exploration of the days of the rest of his family, who all seem to be suffering the same fate of a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Ouija: Due in theaters October 24th, Ouija is a horror movie focused around a supernatural Ouija board that haunts a group of friends as they try to make sense of their friend’s recent murder. Ouija takes us through the group’s demonic struggles and misadventures, as they battle a mysterious presence that creepily addresses them by saying “hi friend,” when surrounding events prove it to be anything but.
Overall, this season is the start to a great deal of new movies, and even some surprise hits may be lurking behind big names. Without too many blockbusters, fall movies can be seen as the remedy for superhero movie and adaptation fatigue. No matter your taste, there is always something out there worth a watch.
